BLOSSOM AS A WILD FLOWER
5" x 7" acrylic on canvas

10th painting in 30-day challenge.

My little painting is 5x7 acrylic on canvas. I am participating in a 30-day challenge with artists from around the world. Today was challenge day #10 to paint a small painting and then "abandon" it in a public location with a note of encouragement for whoever finds it. The painting is based on "A person's life is like grass, it blossoms like wild flowers," Psalm 103:15. My note of encouragement along with the scripture is "If you find this small painting, I pray that your life is filled with joy today and that you find beauty all around you as you are beautiful like a flower, a wonderful creation.

I loved this challenge so much! My heart is full of visions of who might find it. How fun!

CICADA
11" x 14" aacrylic on textured canvas

4th painting in 30-day challenge.

When I was a child, my Dad and I stayed up all night to watch a cicada emerge from its exoskeleton. It took a long time but when the cicada finally was free and spread its wing, it was absolutely beautiful with extraordinary colors. It seems those colors seem to find themselves in most of my abstract paintings. I feel as I grow more into the image that God has placed in me, the freer I become to enjoy all that He has planned for me. I found that the only way to express this was an abstract of a cicada drying its wings before taking off. I had an old painting that I didn't like much so much like I have felt like for so long. I covered that canvas (my exoskeleton) and texture with a new image of me as a cicada getting ready to take off...I'm ready to be free to live in the light if His love and confidence in me to bring Him glory with my art and my life.

FROSTED BOTTLE
5" x 7" oil on canvas

3rd painting in 30-day challenge.

Challenge was to paint something you love and then give it to someone.

Note to my daughter who has supported me and helped me through the last few very tough years: Dear Alysia, my Day 3 challenge for painting 30 paintings in 30 days was to paint something I love and then give it to someone. I decided to paint one of your small frosted perfume bottles. Since we were talking about all of those antique bottles over the weekend I remembered why I loved them so much. I tried my hardest to paint one and I want to give it to you. The oil will have to dry and then I need to varnish and frame it for you. It's 5"x7". Here's a photo until it's ready. Love you! Mom. Her response was, Mom, I love, love, love it. Thank you for thinking of me. It's small enough to put on my desk at the office.
What a wonderful challenge. Two of my challenge paintings are being given as gifts!

SUNSET
9" x 12" oil on canvas

2nd painting in 30-day challenge.

Jehovah Raah, the Lord My Shepherd. When the sun rises and when the sun sets and in all the space and time between, the Lord is always present. "The heavens are declaring the glory of God and the firmaments are showing His handiwork." I hear the Lord my Sherpherd's voice reminding me that He loves me even when I cannot see His sunrise or sunset. Such peace!

COWBOY MIKE
5" x 7" oil on linen

Day 1 of 30-day painting challenge

"No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him." My cousin Mike died last year and I have been trying to get emotionally ready to paint this as a gift for his son. As I painted, the more God guided me to paint a wonderful likeness of him. I was also amazed that I finished this little 5" x 7" in one day! What a promise fulfilled from a scripture I received this morning during my morning worship. Praise God!

MIKE'S LAMP
12" x 24" oil on stretched linen

The stained glass lamp was designed and built by my cousin Mike McNellie.

Every object in this painting is a beloved memory item. Mike cut, designed and built the stained glass lamp. The photo is a reminder of my two cousins, Mike and Bruce who loved to go on ski trips together every year. The cross represents our faith and the scarf on the table is mine.

I was commissioned by Bruce to paint this memorial painting. I pray that it blesses him as he remembers all the wonderful times he shared with Mike over a lifetime.

Rest in Peace, Mike as you enjoy the skiing in Heaven.

I love this bamboo plant. This vase and bamboo plant was given to me by my dear friend, Kay Whitson when my brothers died. I just had to paint something that was so meaningful to me.

Joy to the World

Many years ago I visited my Grandmother Grady in the nursing home on Christmas Eve. She'd suffered many strokes which stole her ability to speak and paralyzed her frail body except for her right arm. When I arrived she waved awkwardly at a poster that someone had placed on the wall beside her bed. She wanted to make sure everyone who entered her room that night saw...really saw...that poster. We kissed her goodnight and wished her a Merry Christmas as we left late that night.

Mom, Dad and I decided to return in the wee hours of Christmas morning and she sweetly passed into the arms of her Lord Jesus. Our Christmas was sad, but hers was truly Merry. I have that poster that I had matted and framed hanging in my home for all to see. I share this story every Christmas as a reminder of my precious Grandmother but most of all to remind me that Jesus, Emanuel means God is With Us.

JOY TO THE WORLD, THE LORD HAS COME!

Merry Christmas,

Oh, Beautiful Glory Divine

by Donna Ham, Artist
Child of the Living God

Oh, beautiful Glory Divine
Your Majesty shines
Brightly as the sun
More spectacular than the morning.
Your Name forever raised
Upon my lips.
None other sustains my heart.
Nothing is as satisfying
To my soul than to know You,
To love You, to serve You.
Just as I take my first breath
Your Holy Spirit fills me with joy.
There is only one place I feel secure,
In the shelter of Your loving arms.
Lord God, holy and upon Your throne
You draw me nearer to You.
My heart leaps within my chest
As I see You everywhere I look.
Your voice fills the air.
Your power and might are
Clear for all to see.
If we open shielded eyes
We who are call by your Name
Forever will receive Your love.
To live lives meant to worship You.
To show the world how pure and wonderful
Is the One who came to show us a better way.
Your Son, blameless who
sacrificed Himself on the cross,
To take our sins upon Himself
Once and forever.
He is risen from the dead.
His love for us forever on display.
We are His sheep, He is our Shepherd.
We are His children, He is our Father.
Oh, beautiful Glory Divine
Your Majesty forever shines
More brightly than the sun
More spectacular than the day.
Your Name, Jesus forever raised
Upon our humble lips.
As the day fades and the
darkness begins to fall,
We bow our heads to You, Our King
In humble adoration
For the gifts You have bestowed,
The lives we've touched.
The Holy Hand who forever guides.
There is nothing so grand
as to lay down my head
Knowing that we are forever held.
When my eyes are closed and
the peace of sleep
allows my body to succumb to rest,
Your peace surrounds me and
Your Hand steadies my heart.
When doubt arises and fears
try to wither this heart,
Your Hand is ever upon me.
And if by chance, this is my time
To kiss this world goodbye,
You will be calling my Name
And I will hear Your familiar voice
As familiar as Your breath on the dawn.
Oh, beautiful Glory Divine
Your Majesty that forever shines
Brightly in the night.
More spectacular than any dream,
Your Name will forever be raised
Upon my lips as I am welcomed home.

Fathomless Billows of Love

9/22/2017

Fathomless Billows of Love
Fathomless means unable to be measured or understood, extremely deep.

Billow as a noun represents a large undulating mass of something, typically cloud, smoke or steam or a large sea wave.

Billows as a verb represents the filling with air and swelling outward (smoke, cloud or steam) moving or flowing outward with an undulating motion.

Love is an intense feeling of deep affection.

Fathomless Billows of Love
24" x 48"
acrylic on textured canvas

Fathomless Billows of Love painting was inspired by an old hymn, Wonderful Peace.

The refrain is:

Peace, peace, wonderful peace
Coming down from the Father above
Sweep over my spirit
Forever I pray
In fathomless billows of love.

The large canvas is highly textured and painted with acrylic paint in many layers.

As I played this hymn over and again, this painting became all about God's peace. Each part of the painting has an element of the hymn.

My interpretation of this painting is that God sends His love down to us and His love fills us with His peace in our spirit. His peace is forever, eternal like fathomless billows of love.

I just fell in love with that phrase, "Fathomless Billows of Love." How extraordinary!

Peace, peace, perfect peace! I pray this painting fills you you with peace in fathomless billows of love.

God's blessings,
Donna Ham, Artist and child of God
